Babies in the neighbourHOOT

JOBURG – Stay clued up on the latest owl news by checking out our 'Giving a hoot' section in each Rosebank Killarney Gazette newspaper.

With the owl breeding season in full swing, we at EcoSolutions are getting ready to be flooded by calls of owlets needing to be ‘rescued’.

Often these owlets don’t need any help from us, and ‘rescuing’ them can do more harm than good. Owls can take care of themselves, and it is not uncommon for them to end up on the ground for a few days, especially when they start fledging.

An owl on the ground will quickly get up into the trees and call its mom for food. So, what do you do if you find an owl on the ground?

Make sure to keep the children, dogs or cats away, and give the owls their space. If there are obvious signs of injury, give EcoSolutions a call, and we will assess the owl’s condition and determine if help is needed. If the owlet requires medical attention, they will take the owlet to Joburg Wildlife Vet, and once it is healthy they will make sure it is released back into your garden.
