Hoot Hoot Hoooray!

GREYMONT – Young owlets may go to the ground to practise their hunting skills.

The residents of Greymont have been given something to hoot about after it was discovered that three new owlets were born in one of the owl boxes. There are three new spotted eagle owlets in Greymont and they have been ringed. Sara Orchardson was one of the members of the Ecosolution team that went to the box to check on the young owls and ring them.

Cliff Barnes, resident in the area, did not hesitate to contact Ecosolutions after he noticed three spotted eagle owlets in the owl box located next to his home. This is the third time his owl box has become a home to owls in the area. He was very excited to be given the chance to assist with the ringing of the owls on the day. Orchardson stated that when they do go ring it is a social, educational and fun event. “Once we are called out and agree on a time we do allow residents to call their friends and family to see and even participate in the process.”

Orchardson explained that residents shouldn’t panic if they see any owlets on the ground. “Owlets will spend about two or three days on the ground. During this time they will fledge and develop their pounce and other hunting skills.” Orchardson added that residents can still call them to check on the owlets for any injuries and to put them back in their boxes if necessary. If they are any signs of injury residents can take the owlets to their nearest vet.
